I was listening to NPR on my way home yesterday and was fascinated by a story about a young man in the 1960’s who decided to see how long he could stay awake.
Researchers heard about his quest and decided to make a case study out of him.
After two days of no sleep, he was mostly ok.
But in from Day Three and all the way up to Day 11, his mental state changed: he couldn’t focus or do simple math; soon he started to rage at the researchers for forcing to him to stay awake. By the end of the experiment, his mental state completely failed and he was convinced he was a famous quarterback for an NFL team.
Interesting what lack of sleep does to our minds.
We begin making stuff up. We create stories that seem like reality. And we believe them.
It’s a bit like the F.E.A.R thing I talked about last week.
Remember? False Evidnce Appearing Real
Let’s put it into context.
Do you obsessively check email because you’re afraid you’ll miss something? Not even necessarily something important – you’re just plain old afraid you’ll miss…something.
If you think about it, though, has any amazing, urgent, incredible, life-changing thing happened via email? Really?
Probably not.
Yet, so many of us still insist that we must be available 24/7 via email. Evenings, weekends, even vacation – we check email. We obsess over it – even to the point of being rude to our friends, our family, coworkers, and guest speakers at events. We check out of “now” in order to stare at tiny screens that might hold messages we “just can’t miss.”
F.E.A.R. indeed.
Let’s change this, shall we?
I’m on a mission for the rest of this year to show you a new way of being, based on reality, not F.E.A.R, so you can:
- Sleep better
- Get the right stuff done
- Make more money
- Work less
- Reduce your stress
- Have time for FUN
If you’re ready for the same, simply reply to this email and say, “Angie, I’m ready.” I’ll reach out to you and handle the rest.
Sincerely,
Angie
