Five reasons to get outside MORE:
- Comfort does NOT necessarily equal happiness or fulfillment – actually too much comfort invites stagnation!
- Stillness + quiet are necessary for brain/body health. In our overstimulated/constantly stimulated world, we lose our capacity for boredom, which is essential for CREATIVITY.
- Our physical bodies are NATURAL. They are literally animal bodies that need to sensory stimuli from nature: sunshine, moonlight, darkness, lots of fresh oxygen, inhalation of microbes, fungi, and other phytoncides from the natural world. They do a body’s immune system GOOD.
- Being uncomfortable – too hot, too cold, wet, tired – these remind us we are ALIVE.
- Awe: it’s a thing our brains need. Studies are showing that animals experience awe, so why shouldn’t we? Awe puts our brains in a suspended state of deep fascination. They shut off our fight/flight/freeze mechanisms (the sympathetic nervous system) and stimulate a feeling of ALIVENESS without the activation (hello Happy Parasympathetic nervous system). Or something like that.
