I’m joyfully consuming a book called, “The Comfort Crisis: Embrace Discomfort to Reclaim Your Wild, Happy, Healthy Self” by Michael Easter.
Now, I am in NO WAY as hardcore as Professor Easter.
What I am, though, is someone who has discovered what HE has brilliantly put into this book:
- Our “comfortable” modern lives are making us sick, fat, and mentally dead.
- As we eliminate the more real stressors/dangers of life 100-1000 years ago, we “create” things to worry about that are actually fairly inconsequential. In short, we are wired to worry about things real or imagined.
- Climate control, cars, and routine are killers. They make us less healthy, less active, and sicker by far.
- It’s our OPPORTUNITY to create some discomfort in our lives.
- Our bodies were meant to MOVE. Our minds were meant to be STILL. We have gotten this totally and dangerously backwards.
- Nature is where it’s at. Preferably for at least three days, but even an hour will do.
I’ve done a number of adventures over the last 10 or so years that allowed me to unplug, immerse myself in Nature, test my limits, and find my edges.
I am never happier than when I am sleeping outside under the stars, aware of the weather, the bugs, the animals, and all Mother Nature has to offer.
Gentle reader – when was the last time you unplugged from the modern world and went a little wild?
The statistics on how this benefits your mind, body, and Soul are astounding. If you’re interested, I’ll share them with you. If you want some ideas on how to get started, I’ll share those with you, too.
It’s time to stop living to work…at least for a day or a week or (in my case) a month each year.
Your brain, body, and (ironically) your WORK will thank you.
Warmly,
Angie
PS: this photo is ME after a 22 day, 340-mile paddling expedition across Florida last January and February.
I was tired, satisfied, and feeling healing, and OH SO ALIVE. And I’m looking forward to taking nine other women outside this weekend for a 3 day/2 night Backpacking + Wayfinding Adventure called “Be WILDER!” in the mountains of North Carolina.
PPS: Want to join me on a slightly more tame retreat? Join me at Earthshine Lodge for a Mind, Body, Wellness Weekend May 13 – 15th. Our Wellness Weekend is all about providing the time and space that you need to connect with yourself, with others, and with nature.
