As we prep for August’s adventure on the Main Salmon River in Idaho – a wild and scenic place – part of the fun knowing what critters to be on the lookout for!
The Salmon River Canyon provides a habitat for an abundant and varied wildlife resource. Big game species commonly observed along the river include bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer and white-tailed deer, mountain goats, black bears, cougar, and moose.
Small mammal populations are well represented by species such as bobcat, coyote, red fox, porcupine, badger, beaver, mink, marten, river otter, muskrat, weasel, marmots, and skunks.
Waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds are particularly abundant during seasonal migrations. Chukar partridge, blue grouse, ruffed grouse, and spruce grouse are common residents.
The opportunities to see wildlife are in the early morning and late evenings.
I remember how thrilling it was to spot the bighorn sheep in Grand Canyon. And we were always on the lookout for scorpions and snakes!
Ravens were rascals on the Canyon trip, too, and LOVED to try and steal anything shiny, manipulate zippers to see what was inside bags, and generally hang around to see what they could gather up.
Keeping an eye out for wildlife is one of my FAVORITE activities on any river trip.
