A couple of weeks ago, I went to check out a new coffee place near my (new) office.
I walked in and the barista/owner was immediately friendly and helpful. She said that she was ready for her afternoon cup and that I could pick from a selection of eight or ten bean varieties and she’d brew us a fresh pot.
LUCKY ME!
I selected an Ethiopian blend (I love them because they have a subtle blueberry taste). As the coffee was brewing, she and I started talking. She told me how much she loved the new building they were in and how her family had a history with it. Then she paused and looked at me. “I’d really love to buy this place,” she confessed as she elaborated on her dream.
Then she paused again, “I don’t know why I’m telling you this. I haven’t told anyone this dream.”
I smiled.
See, this kind of thing happens to me ALLLLLLLLL the time. People say some version of:
- I can’t believe I just told you that.
- I’ve never ever told anyone that.
- I don’t know why I’m telling you this.
- I didn’t even know I needed to say that out loud.
There’s something about me that people seem to trust right away. I don’t quite know what it is, but it’s a powerful force that invites people to speak their dreams and their secrets into the world.
Speaking their secrets gives them relief of the deepest kind.
Speaking their dreams gives them POWER.
I laughed a small laugh and told her, “Watch out – when people speak their dreams out loud to me, they often come true. Get ready!”
I thanked her for the fresh cup of coffee, paid my bill, and left. I’ll be back to find out more about her dream soon. And, I’ll be back for another cup of REALLY good coffee.
