Since I’ve gotten back from my trip, I’ve been in major clean out mode. And if you’ve been reading these notes from me for any amount of time, you might be asking yourself, “What else does she have to clean out?!?!” After all, just a few months ago, my goal was to get rid of half of my stuff.
Well, see…there have been two boxes sitting here in my office. They are labeled “Ideas.” And I’ve been avoiding them.
I haven’t had the energy or the heart to go through them. In fact, I was kind of scared of them. I mean, look at all those potential ideas. The potential revenue. The potential to serve my clients in bigger, better, and more awesome ways than ever.
But more than that…look at all the ideas I’ve potentially wasted, ignored, or didn’t act upon.
*Sigh*
But, I did it. In the past week, I cleaned out those two boxes. I let go of the past. The pile went from four feet tall down to a small accordion file of thoughts, articles, and mementos.
The rest went into the recycling bin.
See, there will always be ideas. What’s in short supply is ACTION.
And I’ve realized in the last six months, I’ve gotten my ass in gear with action – really and truly.
- I’ve gotten rid of nearly half my stuff
- I’ve published three books and have started writing two more
- I write these kooky notes twice a week, nearly without fail
- I’ve spoken to at least 10 groups
- I’ve taught three in-person seminars
- I was a guest on Charlotte Talks with Mike Collins (NPR/WFAE)
- A reporter from the New York Times interviewed me
- I was the featured entrepreneur on WTVI/PBS and CPCC’s TV’s “Great Ideas” program
- I’ve had about a dozen other good spots of press
- My own articles have been published half a dozen times
- I keep my inbox under 50 messages at all times (and it usually hovers closer to 25)
- I can grow an amazing garden (too much zucchini, anyone??)
- My clients are more engaged, more action-oriented, and more awesome than ever
- And, the icing on the cake: I took nearly a month off to raft 225 miles of the Grand Canyon and business hasn’t suffered.

P.S. You want to know the biggest thing I’ve noticed since I’ve been back from my Grand Canyon trip? It’s how soft everything is. My clothes, my hair, my sheets. Even the dogs and cat. In the Canyon, everything is rocks and dirt. And everything has a coating of sand on it. It’s a rough world. Now that I’m home, the world is a much softer place to be.
