Ah, New Year’s resolutions. Seems like everyone is talking about them. And we know the common thought about them: Most people abandon them by the end of January. Others simply swear off making any resolutions at all.
What if instead of resolutions, I told you how I get stuff done?
See, instead of making resolutions, instead of trying … I change my SYSTEM.
Let me give you some examples. Say you want to eat better this year – no more GMO corn, no more high fructose corn syrup.
Normally, you simply go to the closest grocery store near your house. That’s your system.
If you say you want to eat better, you’ll probably get healthier. You might be able to stop some of the medications you’re on. Heck, you might even lose weight.
Instead, what if you simply began reading labels, switched grocery stores to those who ban GMO stuff, or you start going to the farmer’s markets?
These are easy ways to change your system – and improve what goes into your body.
Making simple system changes in your life is far more effective than resolutions to add a new, completely optional habit. (Like rolling out of bed and going to the gym at 6am in freezing weather. Who do you think you’re kidding?)
There’s a subtle but important difference between “try harder” and a system change:
- Try Harder: “I’m going to try to waste less time on my emails this year.”
- System Change: “I’m turning over my scheduling and inbox to a Virtual Assistant.”
- Try Harder: “I’m going to try harder to eat better.”
- System Change: “My family and I will create menus for my meals, shop accordingly, and prep healthy snacks.”
- Try Harder: “I’m going to try harder to spend less time on Facebook this year.”
- System Change: “I’ll set a timer for 10 minutes when I log into Facebook. Every. Single. Time. When it goes off, that’s my signal to go back to work.”
- Try harder: “I’m going to try to read more business books this year.”
- System Change: “Friday mornings between 8 – 10 am, I have a standing appointment to read. This time is sacred and non-negotiable.”
Consider try your new dirty three-letter word. Sure, you can try harder, but eventually routine or lack of energy will win out. Changing a system only asks you (1) to notice you want to make the change and (2) create the new system.
What if you systematically built a system that would shape your business – and your life – the way you want it?
What if I told you you already have?
The gains you make (or don’t) this year will be because of the systems and structure you live every day.
Do you want to try to make 2013 your best year in business (and in life) ever or you would you like systems in place to make that happen?
My request to you: make January about reviewing and reviving the systems you work and live with every day. You won’t have to try. You will simply do and it will be easy.
And my January retreat has been created specifically to focus on these systems and the doing.
More time, more energy, more money. Less chaos, less stress, and less trying to re-invent the wheel in business day after day.
